Nikon 8172 Retractable Rangefinder Tether Review

I use this for scuba diving to secure my scuba console (Sherwood SPG, compass, and depth gauge) when I’m not using it. It isn’t very strong on the surface, but works great underwater. My console is fairly heavy but the retractor does an adequate job on the surface keeping my console from dangling. The weight of the console pulls the tether out a few inches, but seems to hold in place. Underwater this isn’t an issue and retracts fully back to the housing.
The previous tether I had was one of those phone cord types and it just created a mess. This solved the problem and keeps everything together without any tangling.

Tough but will break over time – Matt Johnson – Thousand Oaks, CA United States
I work in the field of corrections where I use my keys hundreds of times a day. This product lasted about 6 months, longer than any other retractor I’ve had before. While it is a tad overpriced, it does do the job. Still, I would like to find one that can stand up to abuse for a least a year.
Great product – Baron von French – Tallahassee, FL
I worked a paper route for 4 months and used this to hold the keys for the vending boxes I serviced. I opened 58 boxes 3 times a week and this kept the keys where they should be, on me. I never once had a snag or issue with this unit. I paid this much for it as I knew the average retractor would not hold up under this level of use.
too early to give it 5 stars, but it’s pretty good – Christopher Lewis – Chicago, IL
i’m a bartender and i use this product to “holster” my speed opener on my hip. despite the plastic case and parts, it feels sturdy and has stood up to a good deal of use/abuse so far. if it continues to hold up under the stress i put it thru on a nightly basis, i’d give it six stars.
